What is a root canal?
When you get a root canal at Las Positas Family Dental, the team restores a decaying or infected permanent tooth. Upon doing so, they can save the tooth from requiring extraction or falling out.
Your provider removes decay within the tooth and fills it with a special material called gutta percha to strengthen it and prevent future problems.
Why might I require a root canal?
If you experience the following signs or symptoms, see the Las Positas Family Dental team for an evaluation:
Toothache
Hole in your tooth
Gum swelling
Tooth discoloration
Facial swelling
Tooth pain
Crack in your tooth
Temperature sensitivity
In the case of minor tooth decay, your provider might recommend a filling, crown, inlay, or onlay instead of a root canal. If you have severe tooth decay and the tooth can’t be saved with a root canal, they might recommend a tooth extraction. Early detection and treatment is the best way to save your tooth.
What should I expect during a root canal?
If you suspect you need a root canal, the Las Positas Family Dental team can often accommodate a same-day appointment. When you arrive, your provider examines your teeth and gums and takes dental X-rays to let you know which dental restoration procedure is most appropriate.
Prior to a root canal, they numb the treatment area. Your provider places a rubber-like sheet in your mouth to keep the affected tooth clean. They remove decay and make an opening in the top of your tooth to access its inner pulp. Using special dental tools, they remove infected tissue and disinfect and dry the pulp chamber.
Next, your provider fills the inside of your tooth with special dental materials and seals it with a dental filling. To further protect your restored tooth from damage and decay, they digitally scan it so a dental lab can develop a custom-fit crown. When it’s ready, your Las Positas Family Dental provider places the crown over your restored tooth and cements it in place.
What happens after treatment?
After a root canal, your tooth might feel a little sensitive for a few days. Take over-the-counter pain relievers to optimize your comfort. Brush your teeth regularly and floss every day to prevent future decay. Call Las Positas Family Dental if your crown becomes loose or damaged.
